Lapulapu to Have His Own National Monument

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) unveiled to the public last July 21 the design for the proposed Lapulapu Memorial Shrine and Museum.

The agency also launched the Lapulapu National Monument Design Competition. The winning entry shall serve as the basis of the Lapulapu National Monument which will be the centerpiece of the proposed memorial shrine. Deadline of submission of entries is on October 23. Details and guidelines can be accessed through www.nqc.gov.ph/en/mon.

The proposed shrine will rise at the Liberty Shrine, Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City. The overall concept is inspired by the Philippine maritime heritage, reflected primarily in the balangay-inspired roof and protruding façade influenced by the katig (‘outrigger’). The balangay and katig are contributions of our maritime ancestors (the Austronesians) to the boat-building tradition of humankind. The patterns on the walls are derived from the amakan, wall cladding typical of a Visayan traditional house.

The Lapulapu National Monument Design Competition is the flagship project of the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC). The winning entry shall receive Php 300,000.00.

In 2021, the country will commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan, the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world, and other related events, collectively known as the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP). Executive Order No. 55, s. 2018 created the NQC for this purpose.
