Singapore — The Philippine Embassy and ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute signed on 04 December 2019 a Donation Agreement to promote the pursuit of Philippine Studies.

Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Joseph del Mar Yap and ISEAS Director Choi Shing Kwok signed the agreement and witnessed by Philippine Embassy and ISEAS representatives.

The Donation Agreement paves the way for the Philippine Embassy to formally turn over the amount of two million pesos to help support ISEAS’s projects and research related to Philippine Studies.

This initiative is in line with the cultural diplomacy thrust of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to forge academic cooperation agreements with other countries. This agreement is also in conjunction with the celebration this year of the 50th anniversary of PH-SG relations.

The Donation Agreement was made possible through the support of Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda.

ISEAS is the first academic institution in Asia to be part of this program. Other academic partners that have already signed on include the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Ruhr University Bochum in Frankfurt.

“Eleven years after former ASEAN Secretary General and DFA Undersecretary for Policy, Ambassador Rodolfo C. Severino Jr. became the inaugural head of the ASEAN Studies Center, we are taking his legacy further in ISEAS through this Donation Agreement to support and promote the pursuit of Philippines Studies. We thank the ISEAS for the trust and the DFA and Deputy Speaker Legarda for supporting this initiative at a time when the Philippines and Singapore celebrate their 50th anniversary this year,” Ambassador Yap said.
