Aiming to involve the artistic community in the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP), the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and National Committee on Art Gallery of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, launches the Quincentennial Art Competition on 6 March 2020. This is in commemoration of the quincentennial (500th anniversary) of the Victory at Mactan, the Philippine part in the first circumnavigation of the world, and other related events in 1521.
The competition is open to all Filipino citizens, age 18 years old and above, based in the Philippines. It will focus on four (4) themes relevant to the commemorations: Sovereignty (depicting the Victory at Mactan), Magnanimity (the compassion exhibited by our ancestors who rescued the crew of the Magellan-Elcano expedition, the first circumnavigators of the world), Unity (the blood compact between the rajah of Mazaua and Magellan), and Legacy (the presentation of the Santo Niño to the queen of Cebu). Artists are expected to conduct their own research to capture the world, society, and customs of our ancestors to be depicted, and employ the latest studies about the event and the period.
The NQC envisions that these entries will form part of the legacies of the quincentennial and to provide an original take on the events of 1521.
The grand prize winner for each theme will receive P 500,000.00. Two minor prize winners per theme will receive P 50,000.00. Select entries will be exhibited at the ManilArt 2020 this October 2020.
Deadline of submission is on August 28, 2020. Entry drop off points are as follows:
