In the presence of Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and their Royal Highnesses Princess Beatrix and Princess Mabel of the Netherlands, Prince Claus Fund Board Chair His Royal Highness Prince Constantijn, presented the Principal Prince Claus Award to the laureates.

Kidlat Tahimik was the third Filipino to be so honored after filmmaker Lav Diaz in 2014 and musicologist Elena Rivera Mirano 2001.

The filmmaker, who was inducted to the Philippines’ Order of National Artists on 24 October 2018, shared his gratitude and happiness in receiving these two awards with the Filipino Community at the closing of the Philippine Embassy in The Hague’s forum on the elimination of violence against women on 01 December 2018.

The Prince Claus Awards, dedicated to culture and development, was established in 1990 in honor of His Royal Highness Prince Claus, father of King Willem Alexander. In 1996, the Prince Claus Fund was established to support, connect, and celebrate artists and cultural practitioners where cultural expression is under pressure.

Since then, the Fund has created opportunities for connection and exchange and stimulated cultural expression, primarily in Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.
