Consul General Edgar B. Badajos virtually called on City of Los Angeles Commissioner for the Board of Public Works, Ms. Jessica Caloza, on 17 May 2021 where Commissioner Caloza shared her priorities in her capacity as head of the Bureau of Engineering, as well as the Board’s ongoing projects, which include the “Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway Project,” a welcome marker leading to the Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles. She added that the gateway, which is slated for unveiling in October this year, was designed by Eliseo Silva who is best known as the creator of the Gintong Kasaysayan mural at Unidad Park at the Historic Filipinotown.

That mural is heralded as the largest, “most famous Filipino American artwork” in the United States.

Commissioner Caloza also touched on upcoming 2021 activities of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Committee (APAHMC), of which she has been appointed as one of the Co-Chairs. The Committee is tasked with commemorating and celebrating the contributions of AAPI communities in L.A., to counter rising incidents of racially-motivated hate crimes.

Consul General Badajos assured the Commissioner of the Consulate’s support to the Commissioner’s projects, especially those related to addressing the concerning rise of hate crimes against Asian and Asia-Pacific Islander communities and the Historic Filipinotown.
