LONDON, Jan 18 — Filipino scholar Nassef Manabilang Adiong and two other experts in Islamic Studies recently launched Islam in International Relations at the Philippine Embassy in London on 16 January through an interactive discussion between the book’s editors on the importance of understanding Islam in the context of international relations and global affairs.

Adiong is an assistant professor at the University of the Philippines’ Institute of Islamic Studies and a founder of the International Relations and Islamic Studies Research Cohort (Co-IRIS) while his co-editors Raffaele Mauriello is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Persian Literature and Foreign Languages, Allameh Tabataba’i University, Tehran (Iran) and a 2013 awardee of the The World Prize for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of Islamic Studies.  Together with them is Deina Abdelkader, an Associate Professor in the department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Middle East Studies at Harvard University.

Islam in International Relations analyses the interaction between Islam and global affairs.

The book focuses on the interaction between Islam and international relations and attempts to show how Islam’s distinct conceptualisation of ideas affect people’s thinking and behaviour in their capacity to relate with various issues in international relations.

“We currently live in a world where different faiths and belief systems coexist.  The book’s publication is very timely because of its ability to ignite a meaningful conversation on the relationship between the Islamic and non-Islamic populations of the world,” said Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo.  “Islam, after all, is not solely a religion but it is a social, economic, political, and foreign policy system unto itself.”

Copies of the book are available in Amazon and Routledge.
