Pasig City — In commemoration of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) 121st founding anniversary, the Philippine Independence Day, and Jose Rizal’s birth anniversary, DepEd unveiled the exhibit “Bayani, sa Lupain ng Ginto’t Bulaklak” in theBulwagan ng Karunungan on June 24.

DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones underscored in her message that heroes can come from all walks of life: “Una, kailangan na pag-aralan natin muli kung ano ang ating konsepto ng isang hero [dahil] lahat ng Pilipino ay may pagkakataong maging hero.Pangalawa, we can be living heroes: serving our country, serving our people, taking risks – it’s not the glory, it’s not the money, it’s not wealth.”

Through the Office of the Undersecretary for Administration (OUA) and the Youth Formation Division (YFD), and in cooperation with Kaakbay ng Guro Research, the exhibit showcases an 8×18-foot mural of Filipino heroes by Baguio-born artist Angelo Aurelio, and portraits and biosketches of national heroes considered as the “Founding Fathers of the Filipino Nation.”

Aurelio, who is also a theater actor and director, created the mural in 47 days. Originally titled “The Bayani Matrix Project,” the mural was first displayed for three days at the Baguio Museum on June 12. The artwork will be a staple in the OUA after the exhibit inBulwagan closes on July 5.
