The Prince Claus Awards, dedicated to culture and development, was established in 1990 in honor of His Royal Highness Prince Claus, father of King Willem Alexander. In 1996, the Prince Claus Fund was established to support, connect, and celebrate artists and cultural practitioners where cultural expression is under pressure.

Since then, the Fund has created opportunities for connection and exchange and stimulated cultural expression, primarily in Latin America, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.
