Brasilia — In line with the centennial celebration of Philippine Cinema this September, the Philippine Embassy in Brasilia hosted a special screening of Jose Javier Reyes’ “Ano ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap? (What is the Color of Forgotten Dreams?)” at Cine Brasilia on August 28, 2019.
The screening was held in cooperation with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the Secretaria de Estado de Cultura do Distrito Federal (Secretariat of Culture of the Federal District).
More than 400 guests, mostly Brazilian high school students, Secretaria de Estado de Cultura do Distrito Federal officials, members of the press, and Filipinos were in attendance.
In her welcome remarks, Ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro described the film as a glimpse into the middle-class culture of Filipinos where domestic servants are not regarded as typical employees, but become part of the household.
The film showed a cultural phenomenon that the Philippines shares with Brazil, a fact that the audience in attendance took note of after they watched the film.
Some also commented on the richness of the Filipino language and its many foreign influences – it was a novelty for the Brazilians present to hear words like trabaho, muebles, sige and other words that are also present in the Portuguese language.
The Secretaria de Estado de Cultura do Distrito Federal invited high school students from various schools in Brasilia to screen the film as a brief immersion into Philippine culture. END
