First ever DOT-DOLE national tourism job fair opens

DOT Undersecretary for Legal and Special Concerns and Chief of Staff Mae Elaine Bathan, together with DOLE Region 7 Assistant Regional Director Emmanuel Ferrer, DOT Region 7 Chief Tourism Operations Officer Judy Gabato, and Hotel Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu (HRRAC) President Mr. Alfred Reyes led the opening ceremony of the “Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso Philippine Tourism Job Fair” at the Cebu Trade Hall, SM City Cebu. The Cebu leg, which run until September 23, received the bulk of the nationwide job fair’s total 5,174 applicants, with 3,074 recorded applicants.

The “Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso Philippine Tourism Job Fair” opened today across the three major island groups of the Philippines today Thursday (September 22).

A partnership between the DOT, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the private sector, and tourism stakeholders, the job fair was simultaneously opened in the cities of Manila, Cebu, and Davao, ushering in the availability of 8,295 jobs in the tourism industry and related sectors.

On its first day, the job fair accommodated a total of 5,174 applicants, majority of which came from the Cebu leg (3,074), followed by Manila (1,388), and Davao with 714 pre-registered applicants. Furthermore, as of 3:00PM, over 1,000 walk-ins and 80 hired on the spot applicants were recorded by the DOT and DOLE.

“Today, we provide you with opportunities to continue to be our partners as we recover from all the challenges that we have faced. Everything that we are doing in the Department of Tourism is to serve the goal of ensuring that we put our tourism stakeholders front and center of our agenda,” said Secretary Frasco *in a pre-recorded message. Frasco is in New York as part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s delegation to the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Manila leg of the job fair led by DOT Undersecretary Shereen Yu -Pamintuan will run until Saturday (September 24), while the Cebu and Davao legs with the opening ceremonies led by Undersecretaries Mae Elaine Bathan and Ferdinand Jumapao, respectively, will be open until Friday (September 23).

Leading the ribbon cutting ceremonies for the job fair’s Manila leg at the SMX Convention Center were DOT Undersecretary for Administration and Finance Atty. Shereen Yu-Pamintuan and DOLE Undersecretary for Employment and Human Resource Development Cluster Carmela I. Torres.

In her speech, Secretary Frasco highlighted the importance of the country’s tourism industry workforce, stating that it is the tourism workers and stakeholders who “are the best representation of the Filipino brand, with your hard work, your industry, your resilience, and your graciousness, you have made known the Filipino brand of hospitality all over the world”.

“We hope that the Philippine Tourism Job Fair was able to guide you (job seekers) to appropriate employment goal,” said DOLE Undersecretary for Employment and Human Resource Development Cluster Carmela Torres, who represented DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma in the opening of the job fair’s Manila leg.

Held at the SMX Convention Center, the Manila leg of the job fair coincides with the Hotel Suppliers Show, the go-to sourcing event of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and leisure establishments in the country organized by Global-Link MP Events International.

“It’s in support of DOT to show that private companies and the government can work well together and having the Philippine Tourism Job Fair held side-by-side with our Hotel Suppliers Show completes the overall perspective of a job applicant through the various exhibitors,” enthused Global-Link MP Events International Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jing Lagandaon.

Some 700 tourism job seekers visited the Abreeza Mall in Davao City for the opening “Trabaho, Turismo, Asenso Philippine Tourism Job Fair”. Leading the ribbon cutting ceremonies for the Davao leg of the nationwide job fair initiative were DOT Undersecretary Ferdinand Jumapao, DOT-11 Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan, DOLE-11 Assistant Regional Director Atty. Jason Balais, and Davao City Councilor Bernie Al-ag. Over 2,576 job vacancies from 42 tourism and tourism-related establishments are available to job seekers from September 22-23.

A one-stop-shop for pre-employment requirements including the processing of PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, NBI clearance, SSS number applications will also be available to job seekers who will visit the job fair’s Manila location.
