Calgary — Seafood City Supermarket and restautants, the biggest Filipino chain of grocerant (grocery and fast food restaurants) in the U.S., has opened its first branch in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on 20 February 2020 at 3320 Sunridge Way Northeast, Calgary.
Seafood City in Calgary is the first in Alberta, the third in Canada (after Toronto and Winnipeg), and the 31st in North America and has 28 branches in the U.S. Two more branches will be opened in Edmonton, Alberta and Scarborough, Ontario this year. Seafood City expects to provide jobs to more than 200 people in Calgary.
True to its banner statement – “Celebrating True Filipino Goodness”, the grocerant offers a variety of Philippine and Asian retail products, such as seafoods (some of which come directly from the Philippines), meat, fruits, vegetables, canned goods and condiments. It also hosts three fast food brands – Grill City, Noodle Street and Crispy Town – that serve Filipino foods. Expected to open in May is a bakery which will sell popular Filipino breads, cookies, kakanin and cakes.
Philippine Consul General to Calgary Zaldy Patron joined Seafood City’s family members Mr. and Mrs. Steve and Pacita Go during the ribbon cutting ceremony that marked the formal opening of Seafood City in Calgary. Mr. and Mrs. Go, who migrated to the U.S. in 1989 from the Philippines, started their supermarket business in San Diego, California, the same year.
Consul General Patron welcomed Seafood City’s decision to open a branch in Calgary as this will not only create local jobs, but will also help promote more Philippine products in the province of Alberta, which hosts an estimated 175,000 Filipinos, the second largest in Canada.
