At a time when global fuel volatility continues to challenge local industries, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod is solidifying its position at the forefront of sustainability and the circular economy. What began in 2024 as a localized waste-to-energy project has now evolved into a premier model of how public-private partnerships can drive meaningful socio-economic impact.

(L-R) Congressman Albee Benitez, Bacolod Councilor Al Espino, Green Solutions CEO, Eng. Ian Fred Solas and Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod’s Director of People & Culture and Sustainability Champion, Mr. Reljun Oloroso discussing about the activity.

The hotel’s flagship Biodiesel Project—which converts used cooking oil (UCO) into high-grade fuel—has reached a significant new milestone. In a recent collaboration with the Congressional Office of Representative Albee Benitez, the property donated 200 liters of biodiesel to the residents of Brgy. Singcang.

This latest turnover brings the hotel’s total contribution to 2,600 liters of donated fuel since the project’s inception. Based on the average production per sail, this contribution is enough to generate approximately 16 tons of collective catch for the local fisherfolk. By repurposing kitchen waste, the initiative provides a vital energy source for local livelihoods while directly helping community members navigate the current fuel crisis.

The success of this circular economy model is anchored by a technical partnership with Green Solutions, led by CEO Engr. Ian Fred Solas. Under his leadership, Green Solutions ensures that the hotel’s UCO is chemically converted into clean-burning fuel rather than being discarded into drainage systems or landfills, effectively preventing environmental contamination.

“Sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity, especially as we navigate the complexities of the global fuel market,” says Reljun Oloroso, Director of People & Culture and the hotel’s sustainability champion. “This ongoing project shows that by working with the government and technical experts like Engr. Solas, we can prove that ‘waste’ is simply a resource in the wrong place.”

Recognizing these efforts, the City Government of Bacolod has invited Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod to showcase its circular economy initiatives at this year’s Panaad sa Negros Festival. The hotel’s sustainability programs is currently featured in Bacolod LGU Pavillion booth that prioritize eco-friendly, repurposed materials and innovative waste management practices.

Visitors to the festival will have a glimpse of the hotel’s green ecosystem, including:

  • The Biodiesel Project: A blueprint for waste-to-energy conversion and public-private synergy.
  • Tela Tales: Now a three-year-old upcycling program, this initiative transforms discarded hotel linens into new products, providing livelihood opportunities for 15 volunteers in Brgy. Felisa.
  • Bokashi Method: A four-year practice where the hotel processes organic waste into compost for the Negros Economic Development Foundation (NEDF). In a closed-loop system, the hotel buys back the farm’s produce at 10% less than the market price, using those savings to fund the procurement of more Bokashi bran. To date, the project has converted 100,000 kilos of food waste to fertilizers and supported 55 NEDF farmers.

As the only hotel in Negros currently holding the Hotel Sustainability Basics certification, Park Inn by Radisson Bacolod continues to advocate for a “greener” hospitality industry. By integrating community-driven projects with daily operations, the hotel demonstrates that the circular economy is a viable, scalable, and essential strategy for the future of Philippine tourism.
