A quick, painless and effective alternative to eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Angelica Dalupan has a whole new outlook in life, and it is after she underwent LASIK surgery. An eyeglass wearer for three decades, she could not believe that she has clear vision again.

“It was like a rebirth since I’ve been wearing glasses for 30 years prior to my LASIK surgery,” she said, “It was always hard to swim, drive, and enjoy watching movies. After the surgery, I find doing those activities more enjoyable than before. Trying out new ones excites me, too! The best part, though, is that I no longer worry about my vision getting worse.”

Angelica is one of Asian Eye Institute’s patients who opted to undergo LASIK and ditched her eyewear. A 10 to 15-minute procedure, LASIK is ideal for people who are over 18 years old are suffering from refractive errors – nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia or the difficulty of reading small prints. It is a quick, painless and effective solution to eliminating use of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

According to Asian Eye Cornea and Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma and Cataract specialist Dr. Robert Ang, many are turning to LASIK because of the inconveniences of wearing eyewear. “With LASIK, they wake up with clear vision. They don’t need to worry about forgetting their glasses somewhere and feel helpless without them; they’re less prone to eye dryness or infection due to contact lens wear; and they can save money on eyeglass replacements or repairs.”

However, people below 18 years old and are pregnant or nursing are advised to delay surgery. he explains, “Below 18, the eyes are still adjusting and changing shape. Pregnant women have unsteady hormones levels that may affect the shape of their cornea, which causes frequent changes in their eye grade.”

Dr. Ang also stresses the importance of LASIK screening before the surgery. “ We want to be sure that LASIK is right for the patient. Aside from eye grade, we also evaluate other factors like their eye health and history, corneal thickness and lifestyle. This will allow us to ensure their safety and accuracy of the treatment.”

There are also new technologies available for LASIK patients. A few years ago, LASIK could only treat distance vision. With the advent of new technology, both distance and near vision can now be effectively improved through Supracor. Supracor is recommended for patients in their 40s, 50s or 60s and are having a hard time doing near work like reading or have had cataract surgery but are still wearing reading glasses. Only Asian Eye offers Supracor in the Philippines.
