Where We Build From

There is a quiet shift happening in the global Filipino story.

For decades, we have told it through distance. Through departure gates and balikbayan boxes, through remittances sent with care and homecomings marked on calendars. These remain essential truths. They speak to sacrifice, to love, to the enduring pull of family and homeland.

But they are no longer the whole picture.

Today, Filipinos around the world are not only leaving. They are planting. They are building businesses shaped by memory, launching ideas rooted in culture, and creating networks that move beyond geography. The story is no longer just about where we come from or how often we return. It is about what we create in between.

For this issue, we explore The Cultural Economy of Global Pinoys, a theme that reflects this evolution. It asks us to look at Filipino identity not only as heritage, but as a source of influence and enterprise. It invites us to consider how culture travels, adapts, and ultimately generates value in ways both visible and unexpected.

It represents an intentional step forward. Our roots are in travel and homecoming. We understand the emotional weight of stepping onto familiar soil, of reconnecting with places that shaped us. That will always be part of who we are.

At the same time, the Filipino experience has expanded. Our audience is no longer defined only by the journey back. It is also defined by the lives built elsewhere, by the businesses launched abroad, by the ways culture is expressed in new environments. To reflect this, our storytelling must evolve as well.

This issue broadens our lens. It looks at how Filipino identity intersects with commerce, creativity, and global influence. It recognizes that culture is not static. It is something we actively shape, whether we are aware of it or not.

At its core, it is about understanding where we build from. It is about recognizing that our origins are not limitations. They are foundations.

Wherever we are in the world, we are not starting from scratch. We are building from something that has always been ours.
