As part of its continuing efforts in building shelters for disaster victims, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a new evacuation center in Barangay Pugaro, Manaoag, Pangasinan.

In a report submitted by DPWH Region I Director Ronnel M. Tan, Secretary Mark A. Villar cited that the P34.74-million project involves the construction of a two-storey accommodation building, a separate toilet and bathroom building for male and female, a three-storey laundry/drying area and water tank building, and three (3) single-storey buildings for the generator, garbage disposal, and pump room. Green engineering has been incorporated in the project which includes tree planting and installation of solar-powered light posts.

Also built within the vicinity is a single-storey office building to house the staff and other personnel of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) and Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).

“This evacuation center complete with all the necessary facilities on a 3,296-square meter land area donated by the local government of Manaoag will serve as a temporary home for displaced families in the occurrence of typhoons and other calamities,” said Secretary Villar.

“We will continue to implement similar projects to avoid using classrooms, resulting to disruption of classes, as well as to ensure the safety of our fellow Filipinos in perilous times,” added Secretary Villar.

Aside from accommodating disaster-affected locals, the evacuation center may be used for recreational activities, site location for relief goods distribution, feeding programs, and medical missions.
