After almost a month, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines’ Materials Research Conservation Division (NHCP MRCD) has finished conserving the 1866 Magellan Obelisk at the Liberty Shrine, Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City. Earlier this year, the Lapu-Lapu City Government, with the guidance of the NHCP, repainted the ca. 1981 Lapulapu Monument at the Liberty Shrine.
Similarly, the NHCP MRCD has already done in conserving the 1980 Antonio Pigafetta Monument at Plaza Independencia, Cebu City. Last year, the Rajah Humabon Monument was repainted under the auspices of the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office (CHAO). CHAO also underwent training with the NHCP MRCD in conserving historic objects and sites. They are expected to carry over conservation efforts for the Heritage of Cebu Monument and other sites and structures in Cebu City.
This April 6, Cebu Province will begin commemorating its part in the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world. It will commence in the islands of Pilar, Poro, and Pacijan, all part of Cebu’s Camotes Islands. It will be followed by Cebu City on April 7. Owing to the sudden increase of COVID-19 cases and the enhanced community quarantine over NCR, the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas takes over the functions of the National Quincentennial Committee in the Visayas from March 20 to April 7.
On April 14, Cebu City will host the D-Day of the 500 Years of Christianity, and on April 27, Lapu-Lapu City will be the ground zero of the D-Day of the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines: the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan.
