The Philippines is an incredible destination for an epic road trip adventure. With an extensive road network that connects many of the major tourist spots, the country offers endless opportunities for exploration by land. However, some advance planning is required to ensure your road trip goes smoothly. Here are some tips for preparing for the ultimate Philippine road trip:

Choose Your Vehicle Wisely

Having a reliable vehicle is crucial, as you’ll be doing a lot of driving over varying terrain from highways to rural backroads. Many opt to buy an inexpensive used car or rent a vehicle specifically for their road trip. Sedans and small SUVs/crossovers are good options that balance fuel efficiency with space for passengers and luggage.

Map Out Your Route

Decide which regions and islands you want to focus on, as trying to cover too much ground will be exhausting. Popular road trip routes include circumnavigating Luzon, driving from Manila through the Ilocos region up to the beaches of Pangasinan, or exploring Visayan islands like Cebu, Bohol and Negros. Build in plenty of stops and don’t rush.

Book Accommodations

While spontaneity is part of the fun, booking at least your starting and ending hotels in advance is wise. This ensures you have a place to stay confirmed. For the rest, research towns along your route with a good selection of inexpensive inns, hotels and Airbnbs to stop at as you go.

Get Vehicle Documents

Ensure you have registration, insurance documents, and driver’s licenses for all drivers with you. An international driving permit may also be required if your local license isn’t in English.

Pack Road Trip Essentials

In addition to luggage, be sure to bring a vehicle emergency kit with tools, jumper cables, etc. A good map or GPS navigation, snacks, drinking water and vehicle cleaning supplies are also must-haves.

Be Prepared for Anything

Expect the unexpected, from flat tires and traffic jams to road closures. Build extra time into your schedule and go with the flow. Staying flexible is key to making the most of your amazing Philippine road trip!
