Pinoy students bag medals in 3 China math contests

Manila — The Philippines triumphed again in international math competitions with young Filipino students bringing home 11 medals from three contests in China.

The young math wizards won 1 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals at the 19th China Western Mathematics Invitational (CWMI), 18th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO) and 16th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO), according to the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG).

These three contests followed the math Olympiad format wherein students had to solve four different problems within four hours for two consecutive days.

“These Chinese math contests are very hard and we congratulate our Filipino students for their triumph,” said Dr. Isidro Aguilar, MTG president.  

19th China Western Mathematics Invitational (CWMI)

At CWMI, held from August 11 to 16 in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, China, the four-member Philippine team all won medals.

They are Immanuel Josiah Balete, St. Stephen’s High School, gold medal; William Joshua King, University of San Carlos in Cebu, silver medal; Charles Justin Shi, Philippine Cultural College Caloocan, silver medal; and Fedrick Lance Lim, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School, bronze medal.

Team leader Renard Eric Chua said participating teams came from different provinces in Mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia and Kazakhstan.

18th China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO)

The all-female math contest CGMO, held from August 10 to 15 in  Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, produced 2 silver and 2 bronze medals for the Philippine team, according to team leader Winsdy Marcos.

Winning medals for the country are  Vanessa Ryanne Julio, St. Jude Catholic School, silver medal; Gwyneth Margaux Tangog, Southville International School and Colleges, silver medal; Deanne Gabrielle Algenio, Makati Science High School, bronze medal; and Hiraya Marcos, Philippine Cultural College-Main, bronze medal.

The competing teams came from different provinces in Mainland China, Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Russia.

16th China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad (CSMO)

The 16th CSMO was held from July 28 to August 2 in Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province, China.

Bagging bronze medals for the Philippines are Charles Justin Shi, Philippine Cultural College-Caloocan; Issam Wang, Manila Science High School; and Stephen James Ty, Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

The Philippine team was headed by team leader Kerish Villegas and other participating teams came from different provinces in Mainland China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Indonesia and Taiwan.
