The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles, together with MYX, the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC), and SoCal Filipinos, organized the first-ever Filipino Heritage Night with LAFC at the BMO Stadium. LAFC, one of two Los Angeles-based soccer teams in Major League Soccer, the top professional soccer league in the US, is currently the reigning MLS Champions.
Hundreds of Filipino-Americans flocked to BMO Stadium to witness the historic occasion with many of them proudly carrying Philippine Flags and wearing Filipino apparel. Filipino-American DJ Flict, who works as LAFC’s stadium DJ, played remixes of Filipino music throughout the match and helped hype up the crowd. Limited-edition Filipino Heritage Night-themed scarves and shirts designed by Filipino-American and LAFC resident artist, DJ Javier, sold out an hour and a half before the game started.
Filipino-Americans who were at the stadium thanked the Philippine Consulate both in person and online for helping stage the event with the ultra-popular sports club. In an Instagram post of LAFC support group, Isang Bayan, they said: “When we started this collective 3 years ago it was a chance for us pinoys to come together and build a community around our love for @lafc . Understanding that Filipinos are an integral part of LA’s history, we wanted the football community to recognize us as a population. Dreaming of a “Heritage Night” was simply that, a dream. With the hard-work of our members and in collaboration with @socalfilipinos , @myxglobal , & the Philippine Consulate, our dream has become a reality. We are filled with gratitude and pride to represent our heritage and club. Maraming salamat (thank you so much) @lafc for this opportunity and LABAN (fight) LAFC!!!”
