Rum lovers in the Danish historic town of Helsingør (Elsinore, were treated to a night of Philippine spirits on 29 October 2021. The rum tasting event, held at the newly-opened bar called “Klaptræet”, (Danish term for movie production’s clapboard owing its name to the place which used to be an old cinema) was organized by the owners, Ms. Juanita Depositario, a Filipino entrepreneur, and her Danish husband, Søren.
Ranked as the third largest rum market in the world, the Philippines’s rum footprint is breaking new ground globally and has reached the shores of Denmark complementing the growing taste for rum of the Danes as influenced by the modern drink culture in the region, drinking less but better quality. Both consumers and bartenders have invested more on seriously deepening their knowledge on a range of spirits, particularly rum. Moreover, stories of provenance and style behind the crafting of the liquor, which both Zabana and Don Papa exhibit, heighten the products’ emotional appeal and connection with the contemporary consumer. Philippine rum-makers–with their distinctive product that is branded premium, small batch hand-crafted production and aged in the tropics–would be well-placed in the current Danish rum market.
The event showcased the best of Philippine rums with Zabana and Don Papa getting the most votes through an informal survey from the local community who attended the opening of the bar.
The rum tasting continued until the following night, attracting more local rum lovers to try the taste of Philippine rums matched with Philippine delicacies prepared by Filipino chefs.
