SINGAPORE 12 November 2018 – Two Education students of the Nueva Ecija University of Science & Technology, Jade O. Hizon and John Rusty T. Perena, won second place at the ASEAN Data Science Explorer 2018 held on 25 October 2018 in Singapore.
Messrs. Hizon and Perena, who are on their last year for their Bachelor’s in Education (major in Science) degree, tackled the problem of youth unemployment in the ASEAN region through their presentation, “Recalibrating Educational Gears through Entrepreneurship Education”.
Their victory was made even sweeter as they almost did not make it to the regional finals. Their province was recently ravaged by Typhoon Ompong that left them with no internet access to work on their presentation.
Singapore won the top prize with their presentation, “From Slumming to Sustainability”, while Vietnam placed third with their presentation, “Conquering the Waves of Global Trade”.
First Secretary and Consul Gonaranao B. Musor represented the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, who encouraged the two students, as well as the other contestants, to share their interesting presentations to ASEAN Leaders to ensure that their bright ideas can be translated into concrete policy actions to benefit the region.
Singapore Minister for Communications and Information S. Iswaran was guest of honor and personally awarded the prizes to the winning presentations.
