A Lecture on Pigafetta’s Role in the History of the Philippines

Pigafetta in Derrick Macutay’s Blood Compact at Limasawa (2021).

On 13 April 2021, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines will pay tribute to Antonio Pigafetta, the Italian chronicler in the Magellan-Elcano expedition 500 years ago, by unveiling a historical marker in Cebu City. In line with this, the Philippine-Italian Association, National Quincentennial Committee, and the Cebu City Cultural and Historical Affairs Office will sponsor the 21st Countdown to 500 Online Lecture Series on 12 April 2021.

The academic event will dwell on the contribution of the Italian chronicler in reconstructing our pre-colonial history. Unlike many European chroniclers and writers during the 16th century, Pigafetta treated our pre-colonial ancestors with dignity in his writings. He provided great information about the lifestyle, belief system, way of life, diet, warfare, languages, and world view of our ancestors, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Tune in here for this free lecture on April 12–the 41st anniversary of the inauguration of the Pigafetta Monument at the Plaza Independencia, Cebu City–at 2pm. Radio Television Malacañang – RTVM will also stream live on the Facebook pages of Presidential Communications, DepEd Philippines, Department of Foreign Affairs, National Historical Commission of the Philippines, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Cultural and Historical Affairs Office – Cebu City.
