TEHRAN 10 October 2018 – As part of its services to Filipino nationals in Iran, the Philippine Embassy in Tehran conducted a simultaneous and all-in-one weekend overseas voting registration, overseas Filipino registration, and film showing activities at the Embassy Chancery on 28 September 2018.
A total of 57 overseas Filipinos residing in the country’s capital, neighboring cities and provinces, and even as far as Ahvaz City located 800 kilometers southwest of Tehran, registered to vote in the Philippine national elections in May 2019.
This brings its registration rate to 35 percent, surpassing the Embassy’s target.
Philippine Ambassador to Iran Wilfredo C. Santos, who spearheaded the event, also took the time to ascertain the condition of overseas Filipinos in light of recent developments in the country and the region.
The Embassy also updated its directory of overseas Filipinos in Iran in aid of overseas Filipino mapping and to facilitate faster coordination especially in emergency situations. Consular queries by some of the attendees were answered during the event. Assistance-to-national cases reported during the event were also attended to.
In celebration of 100 years of Philippine cinema this year and in recognition of the impact of the Filipino diaspora on Philippine cinema, the attendees were treated to three Filipino films—“Fidel,” “Santa Santita or Magdalena, The Unholy Saint,” and “La Visa Loca”—depicting the life of overseas Filipinos.
